I need help deciding what career to choose

I need help deciding what career to choose
...

A perennial question, but how do you fire up your imagination and courage to tackle such a beast.

This subject is dear to me, as I went through this same process about 13 years ago.

And to put it frankly I made a complete @#@&$# of it!

I don't mean that I hate where I am now or anything like that.

I simply mean that the process probably stretched over a 6 year period, from first recognizing those internal pangs of dissatisfaction with my job and career direction, to the point where I had made changes and felt "clarity" and "confidence" in the career changes I had made.

So how do you start your career on track or get it back on track?

I need help deciding what career to choose - where are you now?

How do you feel about your job at the moment are you?

• Bored?
• Do you feel like life is passing you by?
• Do you go to work clock watching waiting to go home, hating most of your day, just looking forward to Friday and dreading Monday mornings.
• Do you feel you have Job Burnout?
• Are you feeling drained?
• Do you feel you are suffering from work stress?
• Are you restless and don’t know why?
• Do you long for a meaningful Job?

Many people never end up doing work that they love and find fulfilling; I know it took me over 30 years to get on track!

You may even know what career you should be doing, but not have the confidence, or resources, or combination of things to take that first step.

This is a journey of self discovery.

I need help deciding what career to choose - What to do?

Don't worry I'm not going to go all psycho babble on you, simply recommend a couple of free resources that I think you will find extremely helpful (understatement!) in helping you to decide what career to choose.

Motivational Appraisal Test.

This free test is 71 questions, taken on-line, will take about 20 - 40 minutes depending how deliberate you are.

Secondly I was going to recommend a book written by Nick Williams who is fast becoming the UK's leading career coach.

The book "The Work We Were Born to Do" first published in 1999, is one of my favorite always to hand resources. But unless Amazon has gone mad is not free.

But; Nick has just released a Free 9 part email course "Discover The Work You Were Born To Do". This is a distillation of the book with expert video commentary from Nick.

It covers Nick's 12 principals for discovering the work you were born to do. Nick’s work has an entrepreneurial leaning, and strong spiritual message, that will inspire ideas, and boost your confidence to follow your dreams.

And if you’re considering using a career counselor this will great preview of what it’s like.

If your looking for a more exercise based approach to finding your true vocation, I would suggest a book by John Lees “How to Get a Job You’ll Love”.

I wish I had these resources when I was reconsidering my career choices.

I hope they help you, and wish you all the best on your journey.
